How do you discard your olive pits?

This question came up over a wonderful Italian dinner that started with an assortment of antipasti - among them, various olives. Do you discreetly remove the pit from your mouth onto your fingers (then hopefully into a pit bowl, or side of your plate)? Or do you use a napkin, fork, or any other vehicle? What is the proper olive pit removal etiquette, if any?
