Why are peaches fuzzy?

Seeing all these great stone fruit around, I couldn't help but wonder - why do peaches and some apricots have that cute fuzz while their brethren (nectarines, plums, etc.) remain 'hairless'?

  • Some say it is to protect the fruit from insects and harmful bugs.  Others say that it helps keep the fruit hydrated.  I personally don't care if the peach has a lot of fuzz or just a little,  it is such a great and versatile fruit.
